Unfortunately when the economy is bad, more scams occur. Please be cautious when asked for any personal or account information via the telephone or internet. If you are not 100% sure why someone would need your information, simply don't give it to them.

Phishing Scam Alert
It has come to our attention that a new Nation wide phishing scam is now aiming to collect the three-digit security code on the back of Visa and MasterCard credit and debit cards. The phishers are trying to obtain this information to perform fraudulent card-not-present transactions (Internet, telephone and mail-order purchases).
A telephone call is placed to a legitimate cardholder. The caller claims to be a representative from Visa or MasterCard informing the cardholder of suspicious card activity. The caller provides the cardholder details on an unusual transaction and asks if the cardholder could verify possession of the card by giving the three-digit security code from the back of their card. The caller then provides a control number in the event the cardholder needs to call back with questions, making the call seem legitimate.
The caller does not always ask for the credit/debit card number because they may already have it. They are looking for the security code, which is what is used for non face-to-face transactions. Many merchants will ask customers for the three-digit number when a non face-to-face transaction is being completed such as an online or phone transaction. If the criminal obtains the three-digit number, they may be able to obtain authorization for fraudulent transactions.
Metro Shores Credit Union's Visa has a department called FALCON. They will make calls to our members to verify transactions if they suspect possible fraud on the account. The FALCON department will only ask our members to verify the dollar amount and place of the transaction to insure the transaction is legitimate. THEY WILL NOT ASK FOR ANY OTHER PERSONAL INFORMATION. They will never ask for the three-digit code on the back of the card. Also, FALCON will put an immediate block on your card if you indicate the transaction is not yours. |
